Why I'm completely obsessed with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels — and why you will be too

I'll be honest with you. I didn't plan on falling this hard.

I've been deep in the dog world for years — breeding, raising, placing puppies, pouring my heart into every single litter. And yet somehow, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel snuck up on me like it does everyone else: one look at that face, and suddenly you're three hours deep into AKC breed standards at midnight wondering when the next litter will be available.

Sound familiar? Yeah. That's the Cavalier effect.

There's something different about this breed

I've worked with a lot of dogs. I love them all. But Cavaliers occupy a completely different category in my heart — and I think it comes down to this: they were literally bred to be with people.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been a companion dog since the 1600s, when King Charles II was reportedly so devoted to the breed he took them everywhere — including Parliament. That's not a coincidence. This is a dog that has been refined over centuries to be attuned to human emotion, to want closeness, to thrive in relationship. You can feel it the second one climbs into your lap and exhales like they're finally where they're supposed to be.

"A Cavalier doesn't just tolerate being with you. They need it. They're hardwired for connection — and that changes how you experience dog ownership entirely."

They're for real life — not just aesthetics

Yes, they're breathtakingly beautiful. The silky coat, the feathered ears, those enormous dark eyes that look at you like you hung the moon. But here's what I didn't expect: Cavaliers are also genuinely athletic, adaptable, and smart.

They're classified as a toy breed, but they come from sporting spaniel lines — which means they have energy, they love to explore, and they're surprisingly trainable. At the same time, they're equally happy curled up next to you on the couch after a walk. Active family? Perfect. Quieter homebody lifestyle? Also perfect. They read the room and meet you where you are.

That adaptability is rare, and it's a big reason why Cavaliers continue to rank among the most popular breeds in the country year after year.

They fit into almost any home

One of the questions I get most often is: "Is a Cavalier right for my family?" And the answer is almost always yes — with one important caveat.

Cavaliers don't do well alone for long stretches. They are not independent dogs. They want to be with their people, and if that's not possible regularly, they can struggle. But if you're someone who works from home, has a flexible schedule, has another pet they can bond with, or just genuinely wants a dog that's present and involved in daily life — a Cavalier will exceed every expectation you have.

They're gentle with kids. Easy with other dogs and cats. Not prone to aggression. And their moderate exercise needs mean they thrive in apartments, houses with yards, and everything in between.

Why I'm adding Cavaliers to what we do at Boise Doodle Co

Building Lemon Grove Cavaliers is one of the most intentional decisions I've made in this business. I'm not chasing a trend. I'm responding to what I genuinely believe is one of the most exceptional breeds in existence — and to the families I keep meeting who are looking for exactly what a Cavalier offers.

My standard for any dog I bring into a program is the same: health-tested parents, ethical practices, puppies placed into homes where they'll thrive. Cavaliers demand that same level of commitment — actually, they demand more, because the breed has specific health considerations that require a breeder who takes it seriously. That's the work I'm committed to.

If you've been thinking about a Cavalier, I want to be the person you talk to first. Not just to sell you a puppy — but because this breed deserves to be understood before someone brings one home.

"The right Cavalier in the right home is one of the most special things I've ever had the privilege of being part of."
